Be AWARE! Online Investment and Romance Frauds!

Be AWARE! Online Investment and Romance Frauds! WikiBit 2023-03-13 15:59

Online investment and romance scams are on the rise, targeting vulnerable individuals who are easily deceived by promises of high returns and romantic relationships. These scams have resulted in significant financial losses for victims worldwide. It is important to be aware of these scams and take necessary precautions to avoid falling prey.

A 60-year-old woman from Macau was cheated out of nearly 6.75 million Hong Kong dollars. According to local police, the victim met a man who claimed to be a successful investor through a mobile application in December 2022. The man taught the victim to invest in a cryptocurrency, and they quickly developed a romantic relationship. The man proposed to her, and they bought a property together and shared a joint investment account! The victim transferred about 6 million Hong Kong dollars before realizing she might have been cheated and reported the case. How could she have given so much trust (or blind faith) and transferred so much money to a person she had never met?

In addition, another female victim in her twenties was involved in an online dating fraud case. She met a male Chinese-American online who claimed to send her some valuable gifts. The victim transferred a total of 120,000 yuan to pay for the related package and tax fees, but she did not receive the gifts after the transfer. Below are some related screenshots of the cases of those male scammers who send semi-nude photos to lure innocent women:

These romance scams have also victimized countless people in Malaysia! One recent case happened on February 5, 2023, where a 19-year-old female student was scammed for RM50K through an online romance. The victim met the male scammer on Telegram and continued chatting on WhatsApp, eventually becoming good friends. The male scammer requested financial assistance from the victim, claiming it was for purchasing online gaming software. The female student fell for the scam and transferred the money to five accounts.

Apart from Macau and Malaysia, Thailand is no exception! On August 18, 2022, a sensational forex scam in Thailand was led by a beautiful actress named Pinky and her mother. Pinky and her mother were involved in the large-scale Ponzi scheme “Forex-3D” forex investment scam a few years ago. They allegedly promoted false advertisements, enticing ordinary people to invest in forex through their website and Facebook accounts. They promised annual returns of up to 60-80%, 100% guaranteed capital protection, and high short-term returns. The police identified 9,824 victims, with a total loss of 2,489,820,321.52 Thai baht, approximately USD 70,952,235.41. These scamming techniques are similar to one another, promoting high returns and high profits.

Haven't they learned their lesson yet? If forex trading could really make people wealthy, there wouldn't be many people willing to do honest work. Although forex trading can bring good returns, it mainly depends on choosing the right broker, using the right trading methods, and legitimately entering the forex market.

Whether it is forex, cryptocurrency scams, or even romance scams, they have attracted the attention of local governments. Local governments have started to remind people on various social platforms to avoid being scammed, but why do some people still believe in these scams? Despite the similarities in these scams, it is not clear why some people still fall victim to them. Some may be motivated by loneliness or the promise of high returns, but there are also cases of boys scamming boys and girls scamming girls. It is essential to raise awareness and educate people about these scams to reduce the risk of being scammed.
